Certain Domains share the Whois information to the world instead of protecting the privacy. Why there is a need for this? Why can’t all domain details be blocked

Domain with revealed Whois information

Yeah, I would like to see whois privacy features as standard for all domain names. But then certain domain name providers wouldn't be able to charge you extra for that added privacy... :dodgy:
-
So you think we can add privacy to .in and certain domain extension where you details are exposed?
-
Law enforcement agencies won't allow it. It is the same as selling a smartphone with an identification number.
-
Oh sadly then we can't use certain domains if we want to protect our data.
-
A media house would think differently.

There are services that protects your privacy. One of them is Njalla (https://njal.la), which is managed by Peter Sunde, the former co-founder of Pirate Bay.

So, as someone from the UK that tends to only buy .com, .net and .co.uk domains, my personal details are always hidden because they can't charge us extra for hiding WHOIS info. Is this not the case for all extensions?
-
No it is not the case for all domains. Certain domain extension details are open
-
Simon So how this works? We need to register with them to protect our domain?
Well, yes, kind of. They will actually buy the domain name for you and it will be their contact info on the domain name:
"We sit in between the domain name registration service and you, acting as a privacy shield. When you purchase a domain name through Njalla, we own it for you. However, the agreement between us grants you full usage rights to the domain. Whenever you want to, you can transfer the ownership to yourself or some other party."

Wow that is good, thanks for sharing this website let me check it for more details.

When domains were first bought the information was always public and I have no idea how new or old the privacy option is. I remember being able to look up any site to find out the info on the owners and after a while it changed to the hosting (at least for the smaller hosting) being the ones with the information showing. I had a portrait site that listed the info for my host which was my brother-in-law.

Oh okay, i thought the domains were sold with Privacy protection from the start. I was so naive.
